Comment and get something back… DaveSaraiva.com goes Do Follow.
2007 at 7:38pm | by Dave
As I mentioned, I’ve joined the revolution… this blog is now officially part of the Do Follow movement. Taking some inspiration from fellow bloggers (J David and David Airey specifically), all comments on this blog have the No Follow tag removed.
There are many reasons why I’ve chosen to go this route, and all of them have probably been given before… but the No Follow tag is not working. I have just cleaned out my spam comment folder, and already I have 42 new spam comments sitting in there. The fact that all my comments were No Follow didn’t deter a single spammer.
So, what did having the No Follow tag accomplish? It penalized our loyal, regular readers who actually did comment on our posts and contributed to the discussion. Also, Jay and I pushed this blog pretty hard for a month or two… we were posting regularly, and it seemed we just kept hitting a ceiling of readership and couldn’t grow beyond that. I’m hoping that now that we’re providing a little somethin’ somethin’ back to you folks that you’ll be more inclined to take part in the dialogue on topics we discuss.
If all goes well, I’ll most likely add the top commentator plug-in as well, and this isn’t the only big announcement here at DaveSaraiva.com: in the next few days, I’ll finally be releasing the unbranded version of our Wordpress template for free!
A few rules for the comments:
1. No keywords in the name.
I know some blogs allow this, but I’ve just decided that this isn’t something that will work here. Please use your name when commenting.
2. Add to the discussion.
“Hi nice post, thx!” doesn’t help anyone, so if you are going to comment, please write something that will add to the discussion at hand and engage your fellow readers.
Other than that, comment away!
Good Profits.

Thanks for the mention Dave.
I’ve been DoFollow for a few months now. There’s still an obscene amount of spam, but I don’t think one way or the other really makes that much difference (like you say).
Cheers.

I have gone do follow as well. I think the key to the spam problem is hand moderation. It corrects both the spam AND the idiots who feel the need to simply put ‘Nice post’ related nonsense comments on your blog.
The key to all of this is to have people comment responsibly and add something to the conversation rather than just looking for cheap links, IMO.
BTW-Adding a subcribe to comments on each post is a great way to keep the conversation going…
Good to meet you!

Congrats on joining the club! I’m going to second what Eric said. It’s always hard to remember where you’ve commented to see if the blogger has replied do the subscribe box makes things fast.

Dave,
I don’t think there’s a way to stop the spam. I look at spam as a big pain in the butt. But on the other hand, you know you’re blog is getting popular when the spamming begins.
I can’t imagine the amount of spams you get from the morons that get caught by your spam software. I get easily over 300 caught spams a day. I used to go through them manually and occasionally I would find one that wasn’t spam. But when I started getting over six pages a day I just bulk erase.
What do you do?
Best of Luck!
