Top Commentator: Final report

This marks our final report on going after top commentator spots on popular blogs in a related field. We will be continuing in this avenue as it definitely brings visitors to the blog, and that’s half of the equation. Obviously, the other half is providing quality content for you guys, and hopefully you feel we’re doing that! We’ve expanded to several blogs on the net, but I won’t be going into detail about those… a fella has to keep some secrets, ya know!

I’ll be exploring the two largest blogs we currently have top commentator spots on, Shoemoney and John Chow; it’s quite interesting to see how the inbound traffic from these blogs has shaped up the first week of April.

The top Referrers of the blog are Shoemoney’s main page with 24 inbound visitors, and John Chow’s main page with 24 inbound visitors as well. I always thought Shoe’s site was the bigger of the two, since he’s been an a-lister for longer and he is also ranked significantly higher on Technorati than John.

However, when you look into referrals from subpages, John sent us a whopping 45 visitors to only 2 from Shoemoney. Obviously, there is no way to interpret these results with 100% accuracy, but I have my own theories on what’s happening.

  1. While John hasn’t been extremely popular in the blogsphere until just recently, he is extremely adept at leveraging his traffic to build more traffic (take his ‘review my blog’ linkbait that’s got him a review of his blog posted on over 500 sites, including this one). So, it’s entirely possible that he has grown his traffic to a larger level than Shoemoney, despite the fact that he’s new on the scene - comparatively speaking.
  2. There are more comment whores on John Chow, so a larger number of comments are required to get you to the top spot. Jason feels that a good portion of the traffic is coming from people clicking on our link in the comments. I do agree that this is a distinct possibility.

Basically, this campaign has been quite successful for us, and we intend to continue on with it for the foreseeable future (at least until our blog growth reaches critical mass). The links we get inbound are highly targeted in my opinion. On our blog, we try to focus on providing specific ‘down-and-dirty’ techniques for building your online business and avoid all the other crap (mostly). I sincerely hope we’re hitting the mark for you guys. If you have any comments about the blog or stuff you’d like read about, we’d love for you to drop us a line!

If you’d like to employ this technique for your own blog, look for the top blogs in your niche that have the top commentator plugin and get on it!

  1. Jay Says:

I still think Shoemoney is overall bigger, higher techocrati score, higher alexa score, hundreds more links..

If I had to point out a difference though I would say that getting a top commenter spot on John Chow requires 100+ comments whereas shoemoney requires like 20ish so right there are alot less clicking opportunities and shoemoney’s top spots also only show up on the main pages whereas on John Chow your listed even on the subpages..

So while that may prove my theory wrong about people clicking directly from the comments it’s also quite likely thats why theres alot more traffic coming from John’s subpages then Shoemoney’s

Considering how popular both these sites are you would think we would actually have even MORE traffic then we do but I suppose beggars can’t be choosers :)
